Celebrate Summer with Pearls!

Elise Thompson

I've always admired and loved pearls ever since the first time I can remember my grandmother wearing her pearl earrings and strand of white pearls.. They illuminated and radiated hung around her neck. Their color range, organic shapes, and different sizes are a designers dream come true. I love mixing different shapes and colors together to create one-of-a-kind thought provoking earrings and necklaces.

Here is a synopsis of the history of the pearl and how they are created. Hope you are intrigued and inspired.

Associated with the moon and sea, the ancient Greeks believed pearls were formed when lightning entered the sea, while the Roman's thought that they were the crystallized tears of angels. In Hindu mythology, different colors are associated with a thought: white with idealism, black with philosophy, pink with beauty, red with health and energy, and grey with contemplation.

Pearls are in fact a fascinating organic gem that form within a mollusk by secreting a calcium carbonate called nacre around an irritant. The nacre is deposited in concentric layers and builds up over time. Depending on location and the type of shell, pearls can take between 12-24 months to form in freshwater, and 2-3 years for pearls to form in salt water.

Pearls are symbols of prosperity, integrity, and encourage emotional and spiritual transformation. They inspire healing, and are symbols of deep emotion and feminine power. They are also the birthstone for June babies, associated with the astrological sign of Cancer, and the 30th anniversary gemstone.
