Amethyst is the violet to purple variety of quartz and the most prized.  The birthstone for February babies, it is also linked to ancient superstitions. Its name is derived from the Greek "amethystos", which means "not drunken", as the ancient Greeks believed amethyst could cure hangovers. Other energetic  properties include groundedness, tranquility and calmness. 

Amethyst rates a 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness and most commonly found in Brasil, Uruguay, and Zambia.
